It’s Time to Leave the Wolf Stuff Behind !

” Domestication has somewhat atrophied the social repertoire of dogs, and many of the social behaviours of wolves are irrelevant to the social ecology of dogs. Besides, what kind of relationship do we want with our dogs? One based on conflicts, dominance and inequality, or one based on harmony, play and mutual understanding? We have spent too many centuries domesticating the dog, breeding-out the… undesirable behaviours, to continue playing an unnecessary power struggle. People that want tensions with their pet can adopt a wolverine or a grizzly. For the rest of us, we’ll stick with the non-judgemental canine.” Simon Gadbois – Canid Behaviour Lab, Dalhousie University.
